Dr. Catwoman (born Salma Angela White) is a fictional character associated with Jane Hoop Elementary series by Rita Christensen. She first appears in Jane Hoop Elementary: The First, which was released in 1996.

In the series, she is an archenemy to the new Jane Hoop Elementary superheroes, but the only thing she hates the most is the leader of the team, Danny. With the help of two of her assistances and best friends; Shego Dalma and Shadow the Monkeyman, the two helped Catwoman to take use every plan she got to rule the world. She is also known to be a murderer, and foils any superheroes who can come into her way.

Character developmentEdit

Catwoman was among one of the characters that Christensen has created on her first day of writing the first book, Jane Hoop Elementary: The First, alongside Danny Gorden, Alec Gutzwiller and Rebecca Henry. In a 2000 interview, Christensen admits that the character has been changed multiple times because she wants to character to look more mature and more dark. She was originally going to be a child, like Danny and the heroes, but the character has been changed into an adult. And also, the villain was going to be a male character, giving the name Dr. Catman (Sal White), but changed it to a female character, Dr. Catwoman (Salma White). Although, the original idea was taken to another character, Dr. Catman (but first name was changed to Mark White and was first introduced in Jane Hoop Elementary: Turbo of Catland.

Christensen explains that she does not know why she wants to changed the character from a male to female, although she does know that she want the character to be an adult besides being a child, because she wants the story to focus about child superheroes fighting against adult villains, so that kids could understand that it's bad for them to be talking to strangers, otherwise they ended might become criminals, by kidnapping them. She states: "This character hates children or teenagers as superheroes. The worst thing that she really hates is being defeated by them, so I would say that not only that she is a villain, but she is also a murderer as well."

Although, before Christensen wrote the book, she is unsure what her evil character will be. She wants him/her to look like the meanest person in the world, and the one who hates superheroes, and wants to take over the world, so that she wants the entire world to give her attention. However, she admits that she read one of the Catwoman comic books, and said that she would have her character to be a villain wearing a Catwoman suit, although, she is not trying to make her Catwoman alike the comic book character stating: "I don't want to copy ideas, but I want my character I created to be wearing a cat suit, and she is not the same Catwoman like she is in the comic book, this is my version of Catwoman, and this is all I want to do for my plan."

Catwoman is the third female character in the Jane Hoop Elementary series to be introduced, after Mrs. Bella Watson and Rebecca Henry onward the start of Jane Hoop Elementary: The First.
