Heroes Forever: The Battle of Time - Part 1 is a 2022 American superhero film, directed by Gary Ross from a screenplay by Rita Christensen. It is the fourth installment in the Heroes Forever film series and the twelfth in the Superhero World franchise.

The film features ensemble cast including Justice Smith, G Hannelius, Mika Abdalla, Marcus Scribner, Chloe Csengery, Jake Short, Greyson Chance, Jeremy Piven, Blake Brown, Amy Tammie, Ben Linkin, Brandon Simpson, Bloom Dee and Barbara Blue and Brooke Timer. Cameron Boyce was set to reprise his role as Devin in the film. However following his sudden death in July 2019, Boyce is replaced by Smith for the role. In this film, it is separated into a two-part series finale of the Superhero franchise after Jane Hoop Elementary: The Final Rush - Part 1 and Part 2.

Heroes Forever: The Battle of Time - Part 1 was released by in some markets on June 15, 2022 and in the United States on June 24, 2022, by Paramount Pictures. It received mixed reviews from critics considering it an improvement from its predecessor. With a production budget of $200 million, it has grossed $534 million worldwide, making it the lowest grossing film in the Superhero World franchise. It is a sequel to Heroes Forever: The Stone of Death and will be followed by concluding entry, Heroes Forever: The Battle of Time - Part 2 in May 2024.

Plot

Devin had a dinner date with Tara. She is than turned into Kate and attacks waking up from a nightmare resulting his side effect of his powers made him hallucinate into seeing Dr. Catwoman alive attacking him, only to be waken from another nightmare and that Catwoman is dead. Realizing that his powers made him overthink things instead of getting ready for his high school graduation, he chooses to keep his mind off the superhero business and to focus on going to college.

Wolfman successfully resurrect his sister Dr. Catwoman with the possession of the Stone of Death. They then began massive killings on innocence's in order to raise newborn army including the heroes bullies who all dropped out of high school. During his graduation speech, Devin experienced his new power, premonitions, he sees that Catwoman is alive and saw a mysterious powerful sword out of nowhere. At the library, he finds the book about the sword. Named the Sword of Avatar, it contains one of the most powerful force of power and it can perform, for good and evil. Alice, who heard about it, informs him that the sword disappeared and is no where to be found.

After the heroes' high school graduation, Danny and Rebecca made a public announcement during the celebration that the two are filing divorce, which devastates Devin and Brooke. Afterwards, the news of Catwoman's resurrection has been exposed by the news, resulting the plans for the heroes going to college being postponed as the entire world is being put on lockdown. With Catwoman's new power, she has the ability to travel time. With that, since she realizes the Magic Ball is missing, she plans to travel time not only to get the possession of the Magic Ball in the past, but also could alternate time, which may threaten to put the original Jane Hoop Elementary heroes' legacy in jeopardy is to alternate time by gaining the possession of the ultimate power the Final Rush as an alternative way to successfully kill Danny, instead of Catwoman.

The city of Cincinnati is even no longer save as Mysterious and Spyman, who both also have new powers where they can control all minds of all of the working police officers and SWAT teams, and since Danny, Alec, Cory and Jaquille are now SWAT team members for the Jane Hoop Elementary heroes, they are being mind controlled as well forcing everyone to join Wolfman's meeting on his ruling. There, he gives everyone a decision to join him to support his army on creating a new population, or if they refused to join him or failed to join, they will die. Afterwards, Mysterious shows the truth of the end of the world if people do not believe him. The heroes and the allies, all refused, but Jason and Rebecca joined Wolfman's side in the process, despite Tara and Devin's protests, especially Rebecca's dangerous plan on saving her friends as she knows they are under a evil spell. After the war enrollment has closed, the heroes' fight off the fire of evil from conquering the world. Devin gets another premonition, at this time he sees Catwoman in the time portal realizing she is up to no good.

Devin and his team decides to travel to Morphin the Power where they are lead by Cera, Elijah and Issac to the portal where they can travel back time to stop Catwoman from alternating time as well as saving Danny, Alec, Rebecca, Cory and Jaquille. Before they can get into the time portal, they are being followed by Kate, Butch, Leonard, Sarah and Rachel, which they broke the shield from the evil accessing Morphin the Power. All of the group ended up in a time traveling portal where all of the group has separated ending up to different time zones. During the battle while traveling, Brooke is stabbed by Kate with her superpower that she can form a knife as Zayne saves her as they both ended up in a time zone together.

Devin wakes up where he ends up to the city of Cincinnati, which happens to be destroyed as he calls for his team but no avail. He gets another premonition at this time, he sees the sword again, but is unsure where the location of the sword is at. Zayne and dying Brooke ended up in a different time zone. After Brooke dies in his arms, Zayne seen a shining light of the sword which happens to be the Sword of Avatar.

In the present, the heroes' bullies return to reveal to Cincinnati that the heroes are dead. Rebecca, alongside possessed Danny, Alec, Cory and Jaquille, have gotten super powers by Mysterious and Spyman for the first time since they passed their powers to the heroes, but they are evil powers as they are ready for action. In the post credits, Celina, the heroes high school transfer graduate Kurtis has feelings for, calls her friends informing them that the world is in trouble and they need help, revealing that she is one of the superheroes from another city as well as she fail to realize that Wolfman is spotted knowing that she has a secret.

He is going through an intense change in his life after hearing the news of his parents divorcing, and also has gained a new telekinesis known as premonition where he can get access to vision future events, a similar version of his father having visions as one of his powers.

Production

Development

A spin-off series was confirmed secrectly by Christensen on June 2014 to be in the works. She admits that the series will be based on her own spin-off book, Heroes Forever: The New Beginning. It was confirmed that the spin-off will be a trilogy. Film distributor Paramount Pictures dated the first film to be released on November 11, 2016. This film has confirmed a November 10, 2017 release date, and third and final for November 9, 2018. The series will be more of a sequel/spin-off series from the Jane Hoop Elementary film series. The franchise will be based on the series spin-off, Jane Hoop Elementary: The New Heroes taking place about ten years after the events from Jane Hoop Elementary: The Final Rush - Part 2, focusing on teenagers, who happen to be children of the original superheroes before they were born, defending the world. It was revealed that the enemy will be the brother of late sister Dr. Catwoman, the original heroes' enemy, who is trying to kill the heroes as to take revenge for the heroes who retired by destroying their kids.

Producers of the original film series, Derek Todd and Drake Jones both decided to come back and work on Christensen's project. Jones admits "Rita's plans is completely brilliant". Christen also got involved being producer for the film, making it the debut of working for films. Gary Ross, who directs the last four Hoop films, confirms that he will be directing the film. On October 29, 2016, Paramount Pictures scheduled the release date for the fourth film for November 22, 2019 and the fifth and final film for November 13, 2020. After completing the script for the third film, she is already working on writing a script for the fourth film, and has ideas for the fifth and final film.

On January 2018, it was announced that the fourth film will be the last one by splitting it into two parts; scheduling Part 1 to be released on June 24, 2022 and Part 2 on November 10, 2023. Originally scheduled to be a two-part finale, but Christensen announced that the film will just be single films and will not be a two-part film. This is the second time in the Superhero World franchise a film is being split into two-parts since Jane Hoop Elementary: The Final Rush divided the installment in two films of Part 1 and Part 2.

Casting

In January 2019, Cameron Boyce, G. Hannelius, Marcus Scribner, Mika Abdalla, Jake Short and Leo Howard all siged up to reprise their roles as the Jane Hoop Elementary heroes. Chloe Csengery, Greyson Chance, Jon Hamm, Amanada Peet, Jeremy Piven, Heather Graham and Chris O'Donnell all reprise their roles by February 2019. By October 2019, Bea Miller, Dakota Fanning, Emma Watson, Orlando Bloom and Andrew Garfield are confirmed to reprise their roles.

Majority of the actors from the Jane Hoop Elementary films including Blake Brown, Ben Linkin, Amy Tammie, Brandon Simpson, Bloom Dee, Barbara Blue, Lisa Black, Logan Lerman and Anna Johnson all reprise their roles. Brooke Timer announced that she would reprise her role as Dr. Catwoman in a significantly large role.

On July 6, 2019, Boyce has died from seizures. On July 9, 2019, just a few days after his passing, it was confirmed that Justice Smith would replace Boyce as the role as Devin.

Filming

Filming was originally scheduled to start around summer 2019, but due to the death of Boyce, the production starting date of filming got delayed to March 2020. However due to the COVID-19 outbreak, production has been put on shut down also causing the film's release date to push back from November 2020 to November 2021 as well as pushing back production to a later date.

Rehearsals began in early September 2020, and principal photography began filming in September 15, 2020 and wrapped around January 25, 2021. Filming took place on October 29, 2020 in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was confirmed that the entire filming will be re-shoot as production is aiming to begin in July 2019 where Christensen admits that after finishing filming and setting up, she describes that "everything looks a mess and it makes no sense, so we need to start all over and start fresh to make this as big as the first three movies".

Ross confirmed with production taking place during a COVID-19 pandemic, safety precautions were put in place to keep the cast and crew safe from COVID-19. He states: "This is one of the scariest time ever that we are all working while in the middle of the health crisis. We are trying our best we can to make this project happen without taking any chances on getting infected with the virus."

Music

John Williams returns as the film composer. The soundtrack contain 37 songs from the film and was released Digitally on June 10, 2022, and on June 24, 2022 by CD, the same day the film's theatrical release in the United States.

Marketing

Although he will not be starring in the film, the film will be dedicated to Cameron Boyce, who passed away in July 2019. Though he did get cast to reprise his role in the film as the leading character, but Justice Smith will be taking his place for the role. The first trailer premiered on January 14, 2022. In February 2022, following the announcement of the special reunion Jane Hoop Elementary: 20 Years Later, it is hinted that the announcement of the film's new trailer will be announced when it premieres on Paramount+ on March 11, 2022. During the special premiere, the trailer for the film premiered around the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and online on April 8, 2022. On The Kelly Clarkson Show, Dakota Fanning reveals that the film's final full length trailer was released on June 20, 2022, five days before the film's debut in the United States.

Release

The Battle of Time - Part 1 was released in some foreign markets on June 15, 2022 and in the United States on June 24, 2022. It was available in regular, IMAX and Dolby Cinema. Before its theatrical release, the film's release date has changed multiple times. It is originally scheduled to be released on November 22, 2019, but pushed forward to November 15, 2019 to avoid competition against Frozen II. Following Cameron Boyce's death in July 2019, the film's release date was pushed back a full year to November 20, 2020 allowing more time for editing, prep, filming and rehearsals to succeed. The November 20, 2020 release will also be 10 days pass the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the release of Jane Hoop Elementary: The First (2000), which first debuted on November 10, 2000. The film's original November 15, 2019 release date slot is now taken by Teen Titans 3, which would later also be delayed as well.

On March 16, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film's release date has been delayed once again from November 20, 2020 to November 19, 2021. Christensen praises Paramount's decision on the film's delay: "I want to let all my fans know that we apologies for all the disappointment. As our responsibility for your safety and patients, we don't want to have to wait at the very last minute and still be in the dangerous time to see one of the most anticipated movie in the beloved movie franchises in probably in decades. Love you guys... Always stay safe and we will see you in November 2021." On November 2020, due to the growing of the COVID-19 pandemic, the film's release date has once again been pushed to November 18, 2022, another full year after the original film's release and again to June 30, 2023. In September 2021, the film’s new release date had changed one year earlier to July 15, 2022. On April 13, 2022, the film confirmed an earlier June 24, 2022 to avoid competition against Thor: Love and Thunder for Paramount Pictures' worries about the possible box office competitions. The release date changes also affected globally as well from July 13-15, 2022 releases to June 22-24, 2022 releases internationally with the earliest releases is Australia, Germany, Italy and Asia for June 15, 2022. In Russia, the film’s release is set for July 14, 2022 but on March 1, 2022, it is confirmed the film’s release date will be on hold due to the ongoing invasion Ukraine, Russia since February 24. The film's latest release date is set for Japan on November 18, 2022.

On May 5, 2022, it is confirmed that the film will not be released in 3D. As a result, this is the first Superhero World film since Heroes Forever: The New Beginning to not be released in 3D, and third overall following The New Beginning and Jane Hoop Elementary: The Final Rush - Part 1. On May 7, 2022, Paramount Pictures confirmed on their Twitter that the film's world premiere took place in New York City on June 7, 2022. In honor of it's 50th anniversary of it's opening, the film held it's Thursday night previews at Kings Island on the day the film premieres nationwide with the gold pass holders will only have access to the screening.

Heroes Forever: The Battle of Time - Part 1 was released on Paramount+ on August 8, 2022. It was released on DVD, Blu Ray and Ultra HD Blu Ray on November 15, 2022.

Reaction

Box office

As of October 14, 2022, Heroes Forever: The Battle of Time - Part 1 has grossed $127 million in the United States and Canada, and $407 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $534 million.

In the United States and Canada, the film was released alongside Elvis and The Black Phone and is projected to gross around $40 million in its opening weekend from 4,300 locations, for its final gross total domestically is $95-135 million to $464-505 million worldwide. It earned $25 million in its first day, including $7.4 million from Thursday night previews, recording a franchise low for both records. It went on to gross $44 million in its opening weekend, topping the box office dethroning Jurassic World Domination after topping the charts for two weeks, but it has the lowest opening weekend total in the Superhero World film series. 40 percent of audiences are women under the age of 25, while 29 percent of audiences are men also under the age of 25. It also has the third biggest Paramount Pictures opening weekend of all-time during a pandemic behind Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ($72.1 million) and A Quiet Place Part II ($58.5 million) and the sixth biggest 2022 film's opening weekend for the summer season. The film than grossed $13 million in its second weekend, dropping 68 percent losing it's No. 1 spot to fifth place. This made it the second worst drop in the Superhero World franchise since 2011 with Jane Hoop Elementary: The Final Rush - Part 2 fell 77 percent it it's second opening weekend as well as the franchise's worst to date to lose No. 1 spot down to the bottom top five. In its 4th of July weekend debut, the film earned $16 million. It came in seventh in its third weekend earning $6.1 million. On July 13, 20 days after it's theatrical release, the film passed the $100 million mark. It came seventh in its fourth weekend with $5.8 million, adding another $3.5 million coming in eighth in its fifth weekend before falling out of the top ten in its sixth week of release.

Outside the United States, the film projected to gross around $65 million in its opening weekend. The film opened in some foreign markets including Australia, Germany, Italy and Asia on June 15, 2022. In each markets, Australia earned $4.5 million in its opening weekend, Germany earned $4.4 million in its opening weekend, Italy earned $4.2 million in its opening weekend and Asia earned $4 million in its opening. In total, the film made a total of $17.1 million, making it one of the lowest opening in the Superhero World franchise. In it's second weekend, the film moved up 361 percent earning $78.3 million, bringing it's total to $95.4 million. It is down 56 percent from The New Resolution ($214 million), 42 percent from The Stone of Death ($165 million) and 39 percent from The New Beginning ($157 million). It added another $42 million in its third weekend for a total of $219 million, making the film cross the $300 million mark worldwide. In it's fourth weekend, the film passed the $400 million mark worldwide. In addition, it ultimately became the fourth highest-grossing superhero film of all-time worldwide in pandemic-era terms. On July 31, the film passed the $500 million mark worldwide.

Critical reception

On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Heroes Forever: The Battle of Time - Part 1 has a low 57% based on 75 reviews with a rating of 8.5/10. It is ranked as the second worst rated film in the franchise after The Stone of Death. Meatacritic gave the film a approval 56 percent out of 100 percent based on 51 reviews, generating a "favorable reviews". IGN gave the film a good 8.5/10 score praising it "same universe, different story lines from prospective."

The film is also being praised on Justice Smith's performances as Devin Gorden being "remarkably brilliant choice for replacement on the legendary character", though many fans criticized the studio's decision on recasting the character following Cameron Boyce's passing in July 2019 stating: "they should have special effect the character or not add the character in the movie. Otherwise, no Cameron Boyce, no movie. R.I.P Cameron."

Part 2

Part 2 of the final installment with the same title is scheduled to be released on April 19, 2024. Paramount Pictures states that the latest installment: "will be the "ultimate series finale of the franchise [for now]. We want to work on other projects for the franchise to keep our fans up-floated with the success of the legendary icon." In August 2022, it is revealed that the next film will be a "multiverse film" featuring the former Jane Hoop Elementary superheroes as kids as well as having a similar connection to Jane Hoop Elementary: The Final Rush - Part 2. The film's previous release dates were November 10, 2023, than it got bumped to July 21, 2023 and finally to April 14, 2023 before pushing it back to November 10, 2023 due to post-production issues. But on November 17, 2022, the film is delayed one last time to November 22, 2024 after Teen Titans Forever - Part 1 changed it's release date to the film's original November 2023 release. This also gives more time for production of the film to be completed.
